Chondroid syringoma of the Skin

Pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal is a rare disease.

 It is considered to derive from the ceruminous glands of the external auditory canal.      Visit: Ear Pathology Online ;

The slow growing lesion usually presents as a soft mass covered with epithelium, filling the external auditory canal.

The microscopic examination of these lesions reveals tubuloalveolar and glandular type structures within a fibroadipose, chondroid, myxoid or hyaline stroma.

In treating pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal, complete surgical excision is essential for the prevention of recurrence.

Chondroid syringoma of the external ear canal presenting as a cyst. Kulak Burun Bogaz Ihtis Derg. 2006;16(2):80-2.

Chondroid syringoma of the external ear canal is a rare, usually firm or polypoid tumor, representing the cutaneous counterpart of pleomorphic adenoma of salivary glands. We report a very rare case of chondroid syringoma in a 40-year-old man who presented with a fluid-containing cyst in the external ear canal. Clinical and radiological examinations showed involvement of the whole external canal to the annulus. The cystic lesion was totally excised along with the overlying skin. The postoperative course was uneventful.

Lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma of the ceruminous gland.Pathol Int. 2006 Jan;56(1):51-3.

A case of lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma in the ceruminous gland is reported. A 69-year-old Japanese woman presented with a mass in the posterior wall of the cartilaginous external auditory canal. Light microscopic examination revealed a well-circumscribed tumor composed of tubular structures with apocrine secretion and ceroid deposition, extensive mature adipocytes, and spindle-shaped myoepithelial cells in the myxoid and fibrous stroma. This case demonstrates the peculiar location of a lipomatous pleomorphic adenoma in the external auditory canal.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal.Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol. 2005 Dec;262(12):969-71.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal is a rare disease. It is considered to derive from the ceruminous glands. The objective of this study is to familiarize the clinician with the clinical presentation and treatment of this disease. We report the case of a 58-year-old woman. Complete resection should be applied for cases in which magnetic resonanace imaging (MRI) and computerize tomography (CT) examination indicate no erosion in the bone and cartilage tissue. The patient should be seen regularly for recurrence.

The chondroid syringoma: report of a case arising from the external auditory canal. Eur Arch Otorhinolaryngol. 2005 Oct;262(10):868-70.

Chondroid syringoma is an uncommon, benign skin adnexal tumour. It usually presents as a slowly growing intradermal or subcutaneous nodule on the face. Treatment involves local excision with a cuff of normal tissue to prevent recurrence. A rare case of chondroid syringoma arising from the external auditory canal is reported. The clinical features, histology, treatment and follow-up are discussed.

Magnetic resonance imaging of pleomorphic adenoma arising from the external auditory canal.J Laryngol Otol. 2003 Nov;117(11):908-9.

Pleomorphic adenoma arising from the external auditory canal is a very rare neoplasm, and there has been no report on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal. We report here a case of 65-year-old male with this tumour, measuring 12 mm in a diameter. Histopathology was confirmed from the specimen obtained at the surgical excision. MR revealed that the tumour had a well-defined margin showing hypointensity on T1-weighted images and hyperintensity on T2-weighted images relative to the parotid gland. The tumour was well enhanced by contrast material. No invasion to the surrounding tissue was observed. These MR findings were compatible with pleomorphic adenoma of the salivary gland origin. In treating pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal, complete surgical excision is essential for the prevention of recurrence. It can be concluded that MR imaging is helpful for making a differential diagnosis of external auditory canal tumours and selection of adequate treatment.

Primary pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal diagnosed by fine needle aspiration cytology. A case report.Acta Cytol. 1999 May-Jun;43(3):489-91.

BACKGROUND: Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) arising in the external auditory canal (EAC) is a very rare neoplasm, thought to be derived from ceruminous glands. CASE: A 43-year-old male presented with a slowly growing mass in the right EAC. Clinical and radiologic examinations showed a well-circumscribed tumor limited to the EAC, without a connection to the parotid gland. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) revealed the typical cytologic findings of PA. The diagnosis was confirmed by histologic examination. CONCLUSION: This case illustrates that together with clinical and radiologic findings, primary PA of the EAC can confidently be diagnosed by FNAC.

Pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor) of the external auditory canal. Differential diagnosis of the tumors of the ceruminal glands.Pathologe. 1999 Mar;20(2):125-9.

A tumor was removed from the right external auditory canal of a 69-year old female patient. The histopathological and immunhistochemical evaluation revealed a pleomorphic adenoma (mixed tumor). The differential diagnosis of the tumors derived from the ceruminal glands, their clinical and prognostic implications as well as the histogenesis of pleomorphic adenomas in this localization are discussed.

Mixed tumor of the external auditory canal.Pathol Int. 1994 Jan;44(1):80-3.

A mixed tumor with apocrine differentiation seen in the external auditory canal of a 39 year old male is reported. The well demarcated polypoid tumor showed proliferation of elongated gland-like or duct-like structures lined by two rows of epithelial cells, occasionally accompanied by foci of keratinization. There were fat cells in the myxoid stroma, in which no chondroid elements were seen. This neoplasm is considered to have arisen from the ceruminous gland, the modified apocrine gland of the skin.

Pleomorphic adenoma manifesting as aural polyp. Report of a case.Arch Otolaryngol. 1980 Jul;106(7):440-1.

We report the sixth known case of a pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal. It manifested as an aural polyp, and the diagnosis was made only after microscopic pathologic examination. Complete removal was accomplished after a total parotidectomy (with preservation of the facial nerve) provided access to the parapharyngeal space surrounding the internal carotid artery, where it is postulated that the tumor originated. A thorough knowledge of the developmental anatomy of this area greatly enhances operative success.
