Biopsies are taken from inflammatory conditions, cysts and neoplasms of the eyelids . Many diagnoses are made clinically without biopsy, but in difficult cases biopsies and small excision specimens of cysts and inflammatory lesions may be necessary.
Biopsies of non-neoplastic conditions are often taken because a neoplasm is suspected. Eg. Hordeolum or stye are very rarely biopsied, but occasionally severe or deep seated infection can mimic invasive carcinoma. Chalazion can also clinically suggest malignancy and are often biopsied. Dermoid Cyst are also sent for histological examination. A wide range of benign tumour and tumour-like lesions and malignant tumours of the eyelid are biopsied for confirmation of the diagnosis.
